چکیده

The long code is a central tool in hardness of approximation, especially in questions related to the unique games conjecture. We construct a new code that is exponentially more efficient, but can still be used in many of these applications. Using the new code we obtain exponential improvements over several known results, including the following: 1. For any ε > 0, we show the existence of an n vertex graph G where every set of o(n) vertices has expansion 1 − ε, but G’s adjacency matrix has more than exp(log n) eigenvalues larger than 1 − ε, where δ depends only on ε. This answers an open question of Arora, Barak and Steurer (FOCS 2010) who asked whether one can improve over the noise graph on the Boolean hypercube that has poly(log n) such eigenvalues. 2. A gadget that reduces unique games instances with linear constraints modulo K into instances with alphabet k with a blowup of Kpolylog(K), improving over the previously known gadget with blowup of 2Ω(K). 3. An n variable integrality gap for Unique Games that that survives exp(poly(log log n)) rounds of the SDP + Sherali Adams hierarchy, improving on the previously known bound of poly(log log n). We show a connection between the local testability of linear codes and small set expansion in certain related Cayley graphs, and use this connection to derandomize the noise graph on the Boolean hypercube. ∗Microsoft Research New England, Cambridge MA. †Microsoft Research-Silicon Valley. ‡Royal Insitute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. §IAS, Princeton. Candidate Lasserre Integrality Gap For Unique Games

We propose a candidate Lasserre integrality gap construction for the Unique Games problem. Our construction is based on a suggestion in [27] wherein the authors study the complexity of approximately solving a system of linear equations over reals and suggest it as an avenue towards a (positive) resolution of the Unique Games Conjecture. We use a new encoding scheme that we call the real code. T...

On the Complexity of Unique Games and Graph Expansion

Understanding the complexity of approximating basic optimization problems is one of the grand challenges of theoretical computer science. In recent years, a sequence of works established that Khot’s Unique Games Conjecture, if true, would settle the approximability of many of these problems, making this conjecture a central open question of the field. The results of this thesis shed new light o...

Computational topology and the Unique Games Conjecture

Covering spaces of graphs have long been useful for studying expanders (as “graph lifts”) and unique games (as the “label-extended graph”). In this paper we advocate for the thesis that there is a much deeper relationship between computational topology and the Unique Games Conjecture. Our starting point is Linial’s 2005 observation that the only known problems whose inapproximability is equival...

Locally Testable Codes Analogues to the Unique Games Conjecture Do Not Exist

The Unique Games Conjecture (UGC ) is possibly the most important open problem in the research of PCPs and hardness of approximation. The conjecture is a strengthening of the PCP Theorem, predicting the existence of a special type of PCP veri ers: 2-query veri ers that only make unique tests. Moreover, the UGC predicts that such PCP veri ers can have almost-perfect completeness and low-soundnes...

Improved Inapproximability Results for Steiner Tree via Long Code Based Reductions
